Future/Futuro

It was not planned, but for some reason our movie-night was filled with films about the future. We saw 3 movies, and all of them were set in futuristic societies. When we were done, we started talking about them. There was a common factor: none of the futures seemmed promising at all. We couldn´t help but compare with our own situations, and with the current reality of our country. At some point one of the girls said that we are going back to the brutality and the rudeness of the first civilizations, back then when things were barbaric and there was not a sense of democracy or freedom. Suddenly, we realize: actually we are not going back to those times...We never left them. We started finding similatiries between environments like the ones we see in TV shows like "Spartacus" or "Game of Thrones", and the ones we just saw in these movies ("Real Steel", "In Time" and "The Hunger Games"). The thing is: in those futures the same basic insticts that ruled years ago are still very much happening. Absurd rules (such as sending children to a battle to death or having our lives determined by the time we earn) are accepted by everyone, and no one stands against them. The conclusion was: Maybe we have not evolved at all. The technology, the modern era... The world changed, the skylines, the view. We didn´t. We are still the same. We changed what surround us, that gives us a false sensation of moving forward, a fake sense of evolution. But the fact is: We are not much different from those men and women that were here before us. Maybe it is time for us to step up. Changing the world is a very lovable idea...But changing ourselves...Maybe that´s a better one.

No fue planeado, pero por alguna razón nuestra noche de películas estuvo llena con títulos sobre el futuro. Vimos 3 películas, y todas estuvieron basadas en sociedades futurísticas. Cuando terminamos, empezamos a hablar de ellas. Había un factor común: ninguno de los futuros era en lo absoluto prometedor. No pudimos evitar compararlas con nuestras propias situaciones, y con la realidad actual de nuestro país. En algún punto una de las muchachas dijo que estamos volviendo a la brutalidad y la rudeza de las primeras civilizaciones, cuando las cosas eran barbáricas y no había sentido de democracia ni de libertad. De repente, nos dimos cuenta: realmente no estamos regresando a esos tiempos...Nunca los abandonamos. Empezamos a conseguir similitudes entre ambientes como los que vemos en series de televisión como "Spartacus" y "Game of Thrones", y los que acababamos de ver en esas películas ("Real Steel", "In Time" y "The Hunger Games"). La cosa es: en esos futuros los mismos instintos básicos que regían hace años siguen ocurriendo y están presentes. Reglas absurdas (como enviar niños a que peleen a muerte o tener nuestras vidas regidas por el tiempo que podamos ganar) son aceptadas por todos, y nadie hace nada en su contra. La conclusión fue: Quizás no hemos evolucionado nada. La tecnología, la era moderna... El mundo cambió, los panoramas, la vista. Nosotros no. Somos todavía los mismos. Cambiamos lo que nos rodea, eso nos da una falsa idea de que estamos avanzando, una falsa sensación de evolución. Pero el hecho es: No somos muy distintos a esos hombres y mujeres que estuvieron aquí antes de nosotros. Quizás es tiempo de que hagamos algo al respecto. Cambiar el mundo es una idea muy entrañable...Pero cambiarnos a nosotros mismos...De repente esa es una mejor.
